TDSB Welcoming Communities (Newcomer Services) recently introduced the Creative Writing & Book Publication Program to over 100 newcomer students in TDSB schools.
The 12-week creative writing program helps students to find their voice. We encourage them to engage with their imagination and share their stories. Writing fiction gives shape to their experiences, and can help students to process and understand struggles and challenges in their lives.
To warm up their creativity, students participate in fun activities through visual art, dress-up, drama and music. They then dive into writing their own story, and finally upload it into publishing software to create their own book for publication. Lastly, they design their own covers and format their book.
Creative writing is a successful way to develop empathy, coping strategies and helps to build long term relationships. All students include a dedication, and this serves as an excellent way to cultivate gratitude. The program also builds their confidence in their ability to write. Many students offer feedback after this project that they believe they are now better writers and enjoy writing more.
TDSB Newcomer Services – Welcoming Communities is a structured mentorship program for new Canadian students in TDSB elementary schools, middle schools and secondary schools.
Working alongside our program staff, and a peer helper, newcomer students participate in a variety of group activities designed to help ease some of the transitional challenges faced when settling into Canadian culture.
Activities may include: homework clubs, English conversation circles, sports and recreational activities, table tennis lessons, a reading buddy program, steel pan drums lessons, field trips, and a culturally-based culinary program.
